Converting CIF to BMP
1. Open the CIF in Ortep-3
2. Change the picture to B&W (select Graphics → Monochrome plot)
3. Remove H-atoms (deselect Contents → Include H Atoms)
4. Grow if incomplete (select Contents → Grow Fragment → Auto Mode)
5. Orient the molecule to your liking
6. Export the screen as a BMP file (select Graphics → Export Graphics Screen → To BitMap file). Use the second-highest resolution (the highest res. crashes or fails to export)
7. Your image is always saved to C:\ortep3v2 with the name “ortep.bmp” so rename this file to something else and move it to a different directory
Labeling BMP in Photoshop
1. Open the BMP in Photoshop
2. Use the select box marquee tool to select your image and then crop it
3. Use the text tool to add an atom label. Choose Arial font (typically default) with a size such that the label text is similar in height to the (well-behaved) ellipsoids.
4. Move the label to a position next to the appropriate atom.
5. To add another label, right click on the layer and select “Duplicate layer”
6. Move this new layer to the next atom and use the text tool to change the label accordingly.
7. When all the atoms have been labeled, first save a PSD (photoshop) file, that way you can come back and resize the labels or adjust their positions.
8. Then save as a BMP. When you want to insert this image in a DOC, use the “Insert Image from File” option in Word. |
